The suburb is named after the Mermaid, a ship that was wrecked off the coast of Queensland in 1829. The ship's crew survived and made their way to shore, but the ship itself was lost to the sea. The area where the shipwreck occurred was named Mermaid Beach in honour of the ill-fated vessel.

Mermaid Beach is located just south of Surfers Paradise and north of Broadbeach, making it an ideal location for those who want to be close to the action but also want peace. The Pacific Ocean borders the suburb to the east and the Nerang River to the west, providing plenty of opportunities for water activities.

One of the main attractions of Mermaid Beach is its stunning coastline. The beach is wide and clean, with soft golden sand and crystal-clear water. The surf is perfect for swimming and surfing, and there are plenty of lifeguards on duty to ensure the safety of swimmers.

The suburb is home to several shopping centres, including Pacific Fair Shopping Centre, one of the largest shopping centres in Australia. Pacific Fair features over 400 stores, including high-end fashion retailers, department stores, and specialty shops.

Mermaid Beach is also a great place to stay while visiting the Gold Coast. The suburb has various accommodation options, ranging from budget-friendly hostels to luxury resorts.
