An uprising by miners against repressive colonial rulers occurred here in 1854, and this location is regarded as the birthplace of Australian democracy.

Some significant Aboriginal cultural sites are located in the state, notably the Budj Bim Cultural Landscape in southwest Victoria. This location is regarded as one of the oldest and largest aquaculture systems in the whole world and has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
